State Representative Jimmie Wilson Jr. is a dedicated public servant and a powerful advocate for the Ypsilanti community, currently serving his first term in the House representing the 32nd District, which includes Ypsilanti and Ypsilanti Township. Born and raised in Ypsilanti, Jimmie’s deep roots in the community inform his commitment to empowering his constituents and ensuring their voices are heard.
Jimmie’s journey began in the south side of Ypsilanti, where he attended Perry School and Fletcher Elementary before moving to the West Willow neighborhood. He completed his education in the Van Buren Public Schools, graduating from Belleville High School in 2001. He went on to attend the Michigan Institute of Aviation and Technology, becoming a licensed aircraft mechanic. Driven by his concern for the environment, Jimmie worked with Siemens Energy, building wind turbines and advancing to the role of Technical Field Advisor.
In pursuit of a career that allowed him to spend more time with his family and serve his community, Jimmie joined Ford Motor Company’s Rawsonville Plant as an electrician. His active involvement with UAW Local 898 led to his election as Trustee in 2014. Recognizing the importance of political engagement for the betterment of his community, Jimmie ran for and was elected to the Ypsilanti Township Board of Trustees in 2016, and was re-elected for a second term in 2020.
Jimmie’s dedication to public service extends through his involvement with numerous organizations and committees, including the Ypsilanti Township Zoning Board of Appeals, Habitat for Humanity of Huron Valley Board of Directors, Washtenaw County Community Action Board, Washtenaw County Jury Board, Washtenaw County Violence Prevention Task Force, and many more. His leadership roles, such as Chairman of the Washtenaw County Black Caucus and Executive Board Trustee of the 12th Congressional District Democrats, demonstrate his commitment to addressing the needs of his community.
One of Jimmie’s most notable achievements was securing over $40 million in supplemental funding from the state to alleviate the inherited debt from the Willow Run-Ypsilanti schools’ merger. This accomplishment highlights his ability to deliver tangible results for the people he represents.
As our keynote speaker, State Representative Jimmie Wilson Jr. brings his extensive experience, genial demeanor, and unwavering dedication to the community. His advocacy for worker rights, union rights, criminal justice reform, access to housing, and environmental protection aligns perfectly with the mission of the PEACE Initiative. We are honored to have him share his insights and vision as we continue to unite dreams, move forward, and develop futures for the West Willow neighborhood of Ypsilanti Charter Township.
